According to WHO, it is estimated that 285 million people are visually impaired worldwide: 39 million are blind and 246 have low vision. Many of these visual impairments occur in developing countries and could be prevented and cured.
In Canada, it is estimated that by 2025, there will be nearly 200 000 Canadians as Blind/Visually Impaired. This is a conservative number since registration is not mandatory. Leading causes of Blindness are Glaucoma, Cataracts, Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, and Retinitis Pigmentosa. In Canada, Blindness affects children, adults, and seniors.
